Artificial intelligence: European and Italian legislation
Updated: 8 October 2026
This page provides access to the main European and Italian rules on artificial intelligence. Their application depends on the systems actually used and on the role of each organisation. Information about a specific AI service must describe that service and accompany its use.
European AI Act
Regulation (EU) 2024/1689 establishes rules for AI systems. Relevant areas include prohibited practices (Article 5), AI literacy for providers and deployers (Article 4), and transparency for certain interactions and generated content (Article 50). Article 50 transparency obligations apply from 2 August 2026; specific transitional provisions must be checked in the current legislation.
People interacting directly with an AI system must be informed when required by Article 50. AI-generated or manipulated content is subject to different disclosure rules depending on its nature and use, including deepfakes and certain text published to inform the public on matters of public interest. A general website notice does not replace notices required at the point of interaction or alongside relevant content.

Italian legislation
Law No. 132 of 23 September 2025 sets out national provisions and delegations on artificial intelligence, alongside EU law. It addresses principles such as transparency, protection of personal data and human autonomy, with sector-specific provisions.

Personal data and privacy
Where an AI service processes personal data, the GDPR remains applicable. The relevant privacy notice must identify the controller, purposes, legal basis, recipients, any international transfers, retention and applicable rights. Additional safeguards apply to solely automated decisions producing legal or similarly significant effects under Article 22.
Before providing information to an AI service, consult the notice for that service. Avoid submitting passwords, payment-card information or sensitive personal information that is unnecessary for your request.
